The work is part of the $570 milliom redevelopment of the facility, the first phase of which opened last Crews now are buildingthe terminal’sx south concourse, central atrium and additional airlinre check-in and baggage-claim areas. The canopy is designec to protect pedestrians from the elements as they walk between the parkin g garageand terminal, RDU says. Crews will use a large cranw to install thehuge mast, which is more than 90 feet tall and weighes 150,000 pounds. Workers then will install threee large trusses that will carrt the roofline 90 feet beyond the terminal RDU says. Large towers will provide temporary structural supporft for the trusses duringcanopy construction.
Installation of the canopy trusses and mast will take placewat night. The work will last six to eight months.
